DOVER, DE – The Delaware State Senate Republican Caucus commends the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for announcing its plans to move forward with the competitive procurement process to lease a new medical facility in Sussex County. This development marks a significant step in expanding healthcare access for the thousands of veterans residing in southern Delaware.
The new facility will provide approximately 136,000 net usable square feet (NUSF) of space, significantly increasing the capacity for veterans’ services in Sussex County, which currently has only 11,155 NUSF available. By expanding the services provided at the Sussex County Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC), the facility will help veterans access vital healthcare services closer to home.
“We are incredibly grateful for this long-awaited progress, which will benefit veterans across lower Delaware,” said Senate Republican Leader Gerald Hocker (R-Ocean View). “Providing easier access to high-quality healthcare for our veterans is a responsibility we take seriously. This new facility is a major step toward ensuring that Sussex County’s veterans receive the care and respect they have earned.”
Senator Dave Lawson (R-Marydel), a Vietnam combat veteran, emphasized the transformative impact this facility will have for veterans in lower Kent and Sussex counties.
“For too long, veterans in southern Delaware have faced significant challenges in accessing healthcare, with the closest VA hospital located in Elsmere,” said Senator Lawson. “This new facility will bring critical services closer to home, particularly for older and disabled veterans who struggle with long-distance travel. It’s a well-deserved investment in the heroes who have served our country with honor.”
The Delaware State Senate Republican Caucus also extends its appreciation to Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons, and Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester for their advocacy and leadership in advancing this important project.
