Winter Safety Tips for Delaware Residents: Preparing for the First Snow of the Year

January 4, 2025

As Delaware prepares for its first snowfall of the season on Monday, it’s the perfect time to revisit some essential winter safety tips. Snow and icy conditions can present challenges for everyone, so taking simple precautions now can make all the difference. Whether you’re traveling, shoveling snow, or just staying warm at home, here are some key safety measures to keep in mind.

1. Stay Informed

Check local weather updates frequently to stay ahead of changing conditions. Reliable sources include:

● The Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA)

● Local news channels

● The National Weather Service’s Wilmington, DE, forecast page

Sign up for weather alerts on your smartphone to receive instant updates about hazardous conditions. We will also share updates from DEMA on our social media pages.

2. Prepare Your Vehicle

Driving in snowy or icy conditions can be hazardous. Here’s how to ensure your vehicle is winter-ready:

● Inspect Tires: Check tire treads and pressure, as proper traction is crucial in snow and ice.

● Emergency Kit: Stock your car with essentials such as blankets, a flashlight, bottled water, snacks, and a first-aid kit.

● De-Icer Supplies: Keep a windshield scraper, de-icing fluid, and extra washer fluid on hand.

● Full Tank of Gas: Always keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent freezing in the fuel lines.

If you must drive, go slow, increase your following distance, and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns.

3. Be Careful While Shoveling Snow

Shoveling snow is strenuous and can put stress on your heart. To stay safe:

● Warm Up: Stretch before starting and take breaks every 10-15 minutes.

● Use Proper Technique: Push snow instead of lifting it, and bend your knees when you do need to lift.

● Stay Hydrated: Drink water to stay hydrated, even if it’s cold outside.

● Don’t Overdo It: If you feel tired or short of breath, stop immediately and rest.

4. Protect Against the Cold

Prolonged exposure to cold weather can lead to frostbite or hypothermia. Remember to:

● Layer Up: Wear multiple layers of loose-fitting clothing and a waterproof outer layer.

● Cover Extremities: Protect your hands, feet, ears, and head with gloves, thick socks, and hats.

● Avoid Wet Clothes: Change out of wet clothes immediately to stay warm and dry.

5. Prevent Slips and Falls

Icy sidewalks and driveways can lead to serious injuries. To reduce the risk:

● Use Salt or Sand: Treat surfaces with salt or sand to provide better traction.

● Wear Non-Slip Footwear: Choose boots with good grip for walking on icy surfaces.

● Clear Walkways Promptly: Shovel snow and ice early to prevent hardening.

Winter storms can be especially challenging for the elderly or those with limited mobility. Reach out to ensure they have supplies and are staying safe. By taking these precautions, you can enjoy Delaware’s winter weather while keeping yourself and your loved ones safe. Let’s work together to make this snowy season a safe one for everyone. Stay warm, and stay safe!
