Senator Richardson Urges Governor Carney to Veto SB 301

July 15, 2024

DOVER, DE – On Friday, July 12, 2024, Senator Bryant Richardson (R – Seaford) sent a formal letter to Governor John Carney requesting he veto Senate Substitute 1 for Senate Bill 301.

“Universities should not have to assume responsibility for handing out medication that endangers the lives of young girls,” Senator Richardson said. “What liability will they face when someone dies from taking the pills?”

“Will the universities be giving ultrasounds to see if the pregnancy is ectopic? This is a high risk situation for the universities. The governor should veto this bill,” stated Senator Richardson.

Below is the content of the letter.

Dear Governor Carney,

I am reaching out to ask that you consider vetoing SS 1 for SB 301. Here are a few questions that I hope you will get answers to before making your decision:

• Who will provide the abortion pills to the universities?

• Does SB 301 require a pharmacist to dispense abortion chemicals to universities?

• Is there a conscience clause in the bill for anyone in authority who may not want to be involved in terminating an unborn child?

• Are the universities prepared for emergency-related incidents from taking the abortion pills?

• Are the universities going to have the janitorial staff trained to deal with the biohazard remains resulting from the abortions

• Are the universities prepared to provide counseling for the roommates who witness any trauma-related incidents?

• Are we sure the presidents of the universities want to accept the responsibility to respond appropriately as providers of emergency contraception? These questions are serious concerns. I hope you will consider vetoing SB 301.

Best regards,

Bryant L. Richardson
