Senate Republicans Issue Statement, Request Legislative Investigation

May 31, 2024

DOVER, DE – The Delaware State Senate Republican Caucus issued the following statement in response to, and in agreement with, the recent letter from the Delaware Coalition for Open Government.

“On Wednesday, May 29th, our caucus received correspondence from the Delaware Coalition for Open Government (DelCOG) requesting, in short, the Delaware General Assembly investigate how an employee of the Delaware Department of Labor (DOL) was able to embezzle $180,000 from the Unemployment Trust Fund, why notice of the offense was not immediately given to the Legislature and public, and what measures the Department is doing to ensure this never happen again.

“We agree with DelCOG’s letter and, too, call for a legislative branch investigation. Our caucus recently met with DOL’s and Division of Unemployment Insurance’s administrative team to discuss what happened. Outside consultants have been brought in to analyze the deficiencies in the agency’s systems that led to this happening. While we appreciate the Department’s openness and willingness to meet, we believe, as elected leaders, that we must perform a separate inquiry to both rectify the issue and reestablish trust between the Department and the public we serve.”
